Mauritania, plagued by political instability since its 2008 coup, is making headway in the renewable energy sector. In April the country inaugurated Africa’s largest solar PV plant thanks to Abu Dhabi-based Masdar and is now working toward Mauritania’s first commercial wind farm.
The country is planning the 30-MW Nouakchott wind farm and has awarded contracts to Elecnor and Gamesa. Elecnor will construct the farm using 15 of Gamesa’s G97-2.0 MW wind turbines. Gamesa will be in charge of the operation and maintenance of the technology for 11 years with turbine delivery schedules for early-2014.
