The French Development Agency (AFD) has approved a €20-million grant for Mauritania, which will have a great chunk going to its energy sector.
The country plans to create a new strategy geared toward the development of renewable energy sources as well as reforming its production and transport of energy.
Mauritania is looking to diversify its energy sources with a particular focus on its renewable energy sector. The country is attempting to reach between 50-80% of electricity coverage over the next five years while increasing its renewable energy to 15% of its overall energy generation. The country’s Oil and Energy Minister Ibrahima Lamine Wane noted that Mauritania has substantial potential in the renewable energy sectors like solar, wind, and hydro which can be exploited with the help of foreign investment.
