Micro-Hydro Schemes for Zimbabwe

Practical Action is pushing its small scale micro-hydro schemes to provide Zimbabwean communities with access to electricity via hydropower. The systems are designed to operate for a minimum of 25 years with a capacity of 20 kW, which could provide power for up to 20 families.

The organization analyzes if micro-hydro is the best solution for communities, and then takes into account the most appropriate materials necessary for each specific project while dissecting its cost efficiency based upon use for individual families. Community members are selected to train and manage operations of the system while also being responsible for establishing a tariff scheme to help pay for the maintenance.
