More RE Coming for Mobile Users

Vodafone Essar, the Indian subsidiary of Vodafone Group, launched a solar powered mobile phone in India, aiming to address problems with the unstable electricity supply in many parts of the country.

The VF 247 solar powered phone is expected to hit the Indian markets in six weeks, costing about $32. The phone is manufactured by Chinese company ZTE, and is also hitting the South African market.

Other mobile companies like Nokia unveiled a bicycle charger kit in Kenya in June using a small electrical generator powered by the rotation of the bicycle’s wheel. Other African-based companies like MTN and a GSM cellular network Vodacom are ramping up their RE efforts to power their base stations in sub-Saharan Africa.
