Morocco, Senegal: Potential RE Collaboration

Morocco’s King Mohamed VI visited Senegalese president Macky Sall to discuss renewable energy and power generation, among other areas of potential collaboration.

Senegal, as of 2010, had less than 1% of renewable energy incorporated into its total power generation, but is hoping to reach 15% by 2015. At the end of 2011, Senegal adopted a renewable energy decree on outlining the conditions of purchase and compensation of excess electricity produced from renewable energy sources. The country generates its renewable energy via thermal energy and hydropower, and while Morocco can’t necessarily offer advice with hydro, it certainly can offer help with renewable energy legislation and solar thermal power.

The countries signed an agreement to improve the transportation industry and regulations for the mining, power, and renewable energy sectors.
