A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the William J Clinton Foundation (Clinton Foundation) and South Africa’s Department of Energy (SADOE) which will result in the construction of a concentrated solar power plant (CSP) by the end of 2010, according to local wire reports.
A pre-feasibility study is expected to result in a tender for independent power producers to build the plant. The Clinton Foundation will conduct the pre-feasibility study to identify potential sites for the solar park analysis of, among others, solar radiation indices, land availability, access to and cost of transmission and assessment of low-cost financing options for the park. If the plant moves forward it would assist in South Africa meeting its goal to generate 10,000 GWh by 2013 through alternative energy resources.
