Mozambican President Armando Guebuza is urging all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states to take a closer look into the southern African nation’s vast opportunities. At the Gulf-Africa Investment Conference 2010, Guebuza said, “They have the expertise, experience, and resources to play a catalyst role in our economy and turn our potential into wealth.”
The African leader harped on the recent changes to the country’s policy that reformed investor laws enabling an easier business climate for foreign companies. Among the various sectors discussed, Guebuza did highlight the country’s renewable energy sector including its hydropower, solar energy, and wind power potential. He said, “Energy is fundamental to agriculture and the dams not only regulate floods but also provide for irrigation schemes."
With its enormous wealth in the hydrocarbon sector, the GCC isn’t as interested in renewable energy as other countries. There is a massive movement into the renewables sector in the UAE, including Masdar, but one selling point for Mozambique to accrue investment from Arab countries could be its strategic location to the South American markets.
