Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi inaugurated the Cuamba power plant in Mozambique last week in Tetereane. This is the first greenfield-to-operations plant in Mozambique and developer Globeleq’s first combined solar PV and storage plant anywhere.
Cuamba will provide power to 21,800 Mozambicans and displace over 172,000 tonnes of carbon over the lifetime of the project. The 19 MWp solar facility also includes a 7 MWh storage system.
Cuamba was financed by the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, a member of PIDG, as well as PIDG’s Viability Gap Funding grant facility & BII Plus.
Globeleq has additional projects in the country including the Temane gas-to-power plant and the 40 MW Mocuba Solar PV plant it recently acquired from Scatec.
In a social media post, Globeleq commented: “Alongside the Temane gas-to-power plant, which is in construction currently, and our acquisition of the Mocuba Solar PV plant, there’s lots to be excited about in Mozambique.”
