MTU Onsite Energy showcases biogas cogeneration modules at Agritechnica

Biogas-powered engines generate up to 2 MW

Application in power generator sets and combined heat and power plants

At the Agritechnica agricultural machinery exhibition in Hanover from November 13-19, Tognum showcased its MTU Onsite Energy brand power generator sets and compact cogeneration modules powered by Series 400 and 4000 biogas based engines in the power range 120 kW to 2 MW electric power and 160 kW to 2.6 MW thermal power.

Power generator sets and compact cogeneration modules powered by 6 and 12- cylinder Series 400 biogas engines cover the range 120 to 400 kW electric power and 160 to maximum 540 kW thermal power. They are available with rated speeds of 1,500 rpm and 1,800 rpm and are suitable for operation in 50 and 60 Hertz power grids, complying with German TA Luft emissions regulations.

Series 4000 includes 8, 12, 16, and 20-cylinder biogas engines producing 772 kW to 2 MW of electric power and a maximum of 880 kW to 2.6 MW thermal power. The product range covers electric power generator sets and compact cogeneration modules for heat and power. Available options include peripherals such as exhaust scrubbers, series-tailored formaldehyde catalyzers, acoustic damping enclosures, emergency coolers and heat exchangers, exhaust silencers and numerous other products. The smaller models have been available since March of this year whilst the 16 and 20-cylinder versions are scheduled for the end of 2011.

The biogas engines are based on the modular concept of the Series 4000 engine family which is designed for diesel as well as gas engines. With an electrical efficiency rate above 42 %, Series 4,000 biogas engines achieve almost the same level as comparable natural gas engines. An optimized engine management system ensures that fluctuations in gas quality have no negative effects on either engine efficiency or service life. The system allows operation with biogas fuels containing methane as low as only 45 %.

About Tognum

With its two business units, Engines and Onsite Energy & Components, the Tognum Group is one of the world’s leading suppliers of engines and propulsion systems for off-highway applications and of distributed energy systems. These products are based on diesel engines with up to 9,100 kW power output, gas engines up to 2,150 kW and gas turbines up to 45,000 kW. The product portfolio of the Engines business unit comprises MTU engines and propulsion systems for ships, for heavy land, rail and defense vehicles and for the oil and gas industry. The portfolio of the Onsite Energy & Components business unit includes distributed energy systems of the brand MTU Onsite Energy and fuel-injection systems from L’Orange. The energy systems comprise diesel engines for emergency standby power, prime power and continuous power, as well as cogeneration power plants based on gas engines and gas turbines that generate both power and heat.

In 2010, Tognum generated revenue of around €2.56 billion and employs more than 9,000 people. Tognum has a global manufacturing, distribution and service structure with 23 fully consolidated companies, more than 140 sales partners and over 500 authorized dealerships at approximately 1,200 locations. Since September 2011, Engine Holding GmbH, a joint venture between Daimler AG and Rolls-Royce Group plc has a majority holding in Tognum.
