Namibian Group Promoting Bushblock for Power Generation

The Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) is producing alternative energy by turning invader bush into high-density wooden logs, dubbed bushblock, in Namibia. Bushblock is used to operate small generators that can feed electricity into the national power grid consisting of chipped and compressed wood with no resin or epoxy added.

CCF general manager Dr. Bruce Brewer said the main obstacle is the distribution and competition from smaller products. The product is sold in retail shops, but is selling well in Windhoek. “Namibians are aware of alternative energy sources, but they still make use of both traditional and alternative energy,” he said.

The organization said that there is enough invader bush to supply the country with electricity for 25 years being both environmentally friendly and most importantly, economical.
