Namibia’s Energy Utility Leans toward More RE Usage

Namibia’s national energy utility NamPower is investigating projects to implement more renewable energy use for the southern Africa country. The utility has signed a MoU with Polytechnic of Namibia for a joint study in wind generation in the south and along the coast of Namibia.

“We have signed a MoU with the Polytechnic so that we have a joint involvement in wind power generation in Lüderitz and Walvis Bay,” said NamPower Managing Director Paulinus Shilamba, adding that the MoU aims at “improving knowledge as well as understanding wind generation.”

The partnership could purchase wind measuring systems set to monitor wind speed and altitude variation in order to decrease the country’s dependency on neighboring South Africa’s coal supply and Eskom. Namibia is hoping to meet 100% of the peak energy demand with locally produced power this year.

“There is no doubt NamPower is committed to renewable energy generation. We are embarking on a number of renewable energy projects,” said Shilamba.
