The National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) began training 545 power utility workers across West Africa. NAPTIN used 300 technical and non-technical employees of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Lagos.
The training is being conducted in collaboration with the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA).
According to NAPTIN’s acting director general, Ahmed Bolaji Nagode, this was achieved as a result of NAPTIN meeting the requirements of APUA for admission into the African Network of Centre of Excellence in Electricity (ANCEE), after it signed a MoU with APUA.
Under the collaboration, NAPTIN will be training a total of 545 staff of power utilities in Nigeria and Ghana. He said TCN staff alone constitute 300, electricity distribution companies 203 while VRA/Gridco Ghana will add 42.
Nagodealso said that training on solar PV installation and maintenance would give those who graduate from the course opportunity to be self-employed and also play a critical role in the country’s drive towards promoting renewable energy as an alternative source of power production.
The first batch, according to Nagode, for the first quarter is 200 drawn across the six geo-political zones
