RD Global and Mera Group Corp. plans to set up a factory in Zambia to manufacture renewable energy products. Mera Group Business Development Advisor Rune Gunnar Dige says Zambia was chosen as a preferred investment destination in the energy sector because of its geographical position among countries in the Southern African region.
Dige, who is also RD Global Managing Director, says Mera Group Corp, as part of its international business will seek to establish a distribution base of renewable energy products in Zambia and then export them to other countries in the region. He says the company will target to empower small-scale farmers, miners and other entrepreneurs that are off the national grid.
A team from Mera will travel to Zambia in late-January to meet with relevant stakeholders to begin working towards full-scale entry into the market by mid-2018.
The product range will provide affordable LED lighting and USB charging capability for off-grid communities. So far, RD Global has deployed units across Lebanon and Qatar with great success. Dige further says Mera Group desires to develop their products to suit the Zambian market, both for charitable donations and for commercial sales.
“With time, the intention is to develop an economic base in Zambia which will include an assembly factory, supporting neighboring markets with Solar LED charging solutions. Additionally, we would like to meet with the premier of a distinguished Zambian University to discuss a possible collaboration on the development of solar LED systems. With the support of RD Global, a university could significantly develop their engineering and knowledge base in the energy sector. We will lend our equipment, expertise and innovative designs to a department of the University to further develop innovations truly intended for Zambia,” Dige said.
