New York state governor Andrew Cuomo is pushing for a clean energy initiative which now has the Long Island-New York City Offshore Wind Collaborative, consisting of Consolidated Edison Company of New York (Con Edison), the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and the New York Power Authority filing a lease application with the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOEMRE).
It’s expected that 30% of the state’s electricity demand will be met via renewable energy resources by 2015 as about $1.85 billion was awarded to further more green projects throughout New York. The offshore wind project could potentially generate 700 MW and would be located 13 to 17 miles off the coast of Rockaway and Long Island. It is expected to generate $2.7 billion in economic growth, including 2,300-4,700 jobs during construction and 85-170 permanent jobs.
