Nigeria Adopts Waste Recycling Banks

Nigeria’s Lagos State is making an effort to improve waste management by developing waste recycling banks geared toward onsite separation of trash via community participation.

Waste management authority LAWMA’s Managing Director Ola Oresanya said there was a need for recycling to advance as almost 9,000 metric tons of waste is generated daily in Lagos alone. He said people would be paid for sorting their waste before disposal with recycling banks managed by two resource managers.

The Ministry of Environment’s Permanent Secretary Titi Anibaba said that the recycling bins will be color-coded: paper (blue), aluminum (orange), glass (yellow), and plastic (red). She said, “The recoverable materials form 25% of the volume of our daily waste.”
