Nigeria Discusses Presidential RE Initiative

Nigeria’s Power Minister Mohammed Wakil said that the country is working on a presidential renewable energy initiative “designed to create a focal coordinating point as well as provide the needed political backing for implementation of renewable energy projects.” The minister claimed that president Goodluck Jonathan was working with Ecowas to help get this program underway.

“Nigeria after successfully privatizing the power sector is set for another landmark achievement by fast tracking development of renewable energy sources. The wind farm in Katsina is under technical audit before commissioning. The Zungeru hydrodam is under construction. Mambilla hydro dam is already approved and the Kashambilla evacuation project has also been approved. Several renewable energy projects are all in the pipeline,” he said.
