Nigeria: Establishing Roundtable to Meet Energy Goals

Nigeria is planning to establish a “National Climate Change Roundtable (NCCR)” that will include participation of the government’s Special Climate Change Unit, civil society organizations, development partners, and the business sector.

The first meeting is scheduled to take place in early January with Canadian International Development Agency, and possibly the UN Development Program hosting in preparation for the First National Climate Change Summit/Climate Change Techno-Expo 2009. This will be one of the implementation steps the government will take in its effort to move 20% of the Nigerian population toward renewable energy by 2012. The summit will take place in conjunction with the International Earth Day on April 22, 2009.

Ansgar Kiene, Campaign Manager of the World Future Council, said: “The ambitious, but absolutely necessary objective of producing 20% of Nigeria’s electricity from Renewable Energy sources by 2012 definitely points to the sustainable development of the country’s energy production. Nigeria could become the role-model on RE promotion and provision for the whole African continent!”
