Nigerian Cover-Up over Sectarian Clashes and Fatalities

News outlet Al Jazeera reports that new evidence was acquired that suggests that the number of fatalities in recent sectarian fighting in northern Nigeria may be higher than so-called official numbers.

The Nigerian army claims that only 36 people died in the Baga conflict in Borno state – which the vast majority being members of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram. However, local politicians and residents say that the figure is upward to 200, mostly civilians with claims supported by aid organizations.

Al Jazeera’s Yvonne Ndege gained access to the area where reports of mass graves were disputed when only a grave site with about 20 graves. US-based Human Rights Watch claims that 2,000 homes were burnt down, a report that the army disputes maintaining that only 30 homes were destroyed.

While the discrepancies are apparent, it isn’t the first such instance of inaccurate figures from the country; however, the major problem is that clashes continue and a resolution does not seem to be in the near-term.
