Kidnappings for financial gain are not unusual in Nigeria; however, political kidnappings are rare. The mother of the West African country’s finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was abducted from her home in Delta State on December 9.
Prof. Kamene Okonjo had received threats prior to the abduction, but police are unable to confirm the relation to the kidnapping.
The finance minister has been leading a high-profile campaign against corruption within various factions in Nigeria. Okonjo-Iweala has been leading a campaign against the fuel subsidy program, delaying payment to fuel importers to acquire verification of the claims for subsidies.
