OPT, Mitsui: Increasing Wave Energy

Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has partnered with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. to develop its Power Buoy technology to help further the Asian island’s wave energy sector.

In 2009, OPT signed a MoU with Mitsui, Idemitsu Kosan Co., and Japan Wind Development Co. to increase wave power while working with the government to implement measures to boost the sector. The Japanese government plans to increase its renewable energy sources to 10% by 2020.

This contract will develop a new mooring system for the Power Buoy, which is customized for wave power stations off Japan’s coast, and will undergo testing at Mitsui’s wave tank facilities.
