With 95% of the world’s transport petroleum-based, there are few industries not heavily dependant on oil. From plastics to cosmetics, synthetics and chemicals – if it’s not entirely natural, chances are it’s petroleum-based. Our heavy reliance on oil is unlikely to change in the short- or medium term. “Until more sustainable, ‘greener’ technologies are found and developed, petrochemicals will remain the major energy source of the world,” says John Thomson of Exhibition Management Services, organisers of the Petro.t.ex Africa 2009 exhibition. The event takes place from 9 to 11 June at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, South Africa.

“Underestimating our collective dependence on petroleum would be a mistake”, continues Thomson. “Not only is it cheap, it is the most abundant energy source ever known to humanity. Without it, our global economy would come to a halt. But the global pressure is on to introduce ‘greener’, more sustainable technologies and processes into the upstream, midstream and downstream petrochemicals industry.”

Petro.t.ex Africa 2009 will highlight new developments, major projects, innovations and trends in the midstream sector of the sub-Saharan oil and gas economy.

Sourcing 89% of its energy needs from fossil fuels, South Africa is a carbon intensive nation. If we want to avoid financial and social penalties, which look set to hit the developed and the advanced developing countries, such as South Africa, we as a country will have to find lower-carbon emitting behaviours in our energy sector. Being one of the most energy inefficient and high carbon producing countries per capita in the world, South Africa emits approximately 400 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT), has reported that energy wastage, excessive coal burning power stations and old inefficient machinery in the industrial sector has had a negative outcome for society and the economy.

“Delegates at Petro.t.ex Africa 2009 will have an opportunity to explore new developments, technologies and trends to positively change the manner in which we address our dire energy issue in South Africa,” concludes Thomson.

Business Matchmaking Programme

Siemens is sponsoring a powerful networking platform for all Petro.t.ex participants. One-on-one meetings for all registered exhibitors, visitor and conference delegates will be organised.

The expo runs alongside WaterTec Africa 2009 and Pumps, Valves and Pipes Africa 2009 (PVPA 2009). WaterTec Africa 2009 is an international water technology exhibition and conference. PVPA 2009 is the sixth international trade fair for suppliers to the following industries: agriculture and horticulture, beverage, brewing, dairy, food, mining, industrial and civil engineering, manufacturing, national and local government, petrochemicals, pulp and paper and water utilities.
