Potential Oil Exporter if More Focused on RE

Canada’s northernmost territory Nunavut is looking to exploit its abundant renewable energy resources, which could lead to the area becoming an exporter of fossil fuels. Premier Eva Aariak said the territory was studying ways to boost its use of hydropower, wind, and solar power to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. “Right now, we are at the research and study stage,” she added including the construction of a hydroelectric power plant near the capital of Iqaluit.

As one of the world’s least populated regions, Nunavut relies primarily on diesel fuel to run generators and heat homes.

The Arctic, including sections controlled by Canada, may hold 90 billion barrels of oil, more than the proven reserves of Nigeria, Kazakhstan and Mexico combined, and enough to supply the U.S. for more than a decade, the U.S. Geological Survey said in 2008.
