Potential Two-Term Presidential Referendum for Zimbabwe

Zimbabweans are taking to the polls to vote on a constitutional referendum that could limit future presidents to two terms. News outlets have reported that voters were not educated on the potential legislation; however, over three-decade president Robert Mugabe denied the allegations stressing that people were widely consulted about the changes.

Other changes include adding a bill of rights to protect free speech, nixing the president’s authoritarian control with complete veto power, and halting legal challenges against land redistribution.

If the referendum passes, the term limits will not apply to Mugabe’s previous terms. He will be able to stand for re-election in July. The 89-year old leader, currently in a power-sharing government with prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai, could theoretically serve until he is 99-years old if the legislation is approved.
