Rebels Leave Strategic City in DRC

M23 rebels withdrew from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) key city Goma after a regionally brokered agreement. The city has been the epicenter of conflict sparked by ethnic and political tensions as well as fighting over mineral resources present.

Over 270 Congolese police arrived in the city as part of the transition with rebels pulling back to a 20-km buffer zone around Goma. The accord, mediated by Uganda, said the M23 was supposed to leave 100 soldiers behind to guard the airport alongside a UN-backed body and government unit.
