The 80-MW Rusumo Falls hydropower plant being jointly developed by the governments of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania is due to be completed by the end of October, according to an announcement made by the Rusumo Power Company (RPC).
The plant, located at Rusumo Falls, shares a common border between Rwanda and Tanzania on the Kagera River. The new hydropower production facilities will include three 27MW turbines on the south bank of the river in Tanzania, and the substation is located on the northern bank in Rwanda.
The power plant is at 99.7% completion according to a statement by Rusumo Power Company. Commissioning tests of the three units have been successful and will be completed by the end of October. The three utilities, REG, Tanesco, and Regideso are gradually receiving power during the tests. By the end of the year, RPC will increase the electricity fed to the national grids of Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
“We are targeting to fully use the Rusumo electricity by end of 2023,” stated Council of Ministers Chairman Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko.
