Russia has signed a contract with Nigeria for the construction and operation of nuclear power plants, according to a Bloomberg report. The West African country is pulling out all the stops to help counteract its energy deficit, with nuclear being just one aspect of its power projects.
The agreement with Russia includes, among other things, conducting feasibility studies including the study of the sites of implantation, the evaluation of the capacities, the financing and the establishment of a schedule for the implementation of the project. The signing of this new agreement comes to materialize the intergovernmental agreements concluded in 2009 by the two countries in order to proceed to a peaceful us.e of nuclear power.
In 2015, the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission had discussed the establishment of four plants at an estimated cost of about $ 20 billion.
