Rwanda has announced that it will explore its potential for geothermal energy by kicking off a drilling campaign in December.
Rwandan Ministry of Infrastructure Permanent Secretary James Kamanzi said that the government had already signed a contract with a drilling company. The government official said that a better analysis would result from the previous three boreholes drilling in Karisimbi. He said three potential sites, with a depth of up to 2 miles, have tentatively been identified on the southern slopes of the Mount Karisimbi volcano, the New Times newspaper reported.
Perspective geothermal sites could include near the Volcanoes National Park and hot springs of Gisenyi and Bugarama in western Rwanda.
