Rwanda is set to hold its own solar PV plant totaling 8.5 MW, which will increase the country’s power generation by 8%. BYD Co. Ltd. announced that it shipped Rwanda’s first PV solar energy system to help the country increase its renewable energy generation by 500%.
The plant will be located 60 km from Kigale, constructed by Scatec Solar with an expected completion date of H2 2014. Once the scheme is complete, it is expected to generate 16 million kWh. The Rwanda Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) signed a 25-year PPA for energy from the plant. BYD is actively participating in the rapid development of the global PV market and has supplied Scatec Solar with modules since 2012 including a 75-MW project in Kalkbult, South Africa.
Tom Zhao, General Manager of BYD’s Solar Energy division, said: “BYD is seeking to expand business throughout Africa which has the world’s best solar resources.”
