SA Met with Over 100 Renewable Proposals

The South African government recently requested expressions of interest for renewable energy projects, and was met with an overwhelming show of proposals.

The Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) closed the proposal date on October 12 and is currently sifting through the proposals to analyze their technical viability. No bidders were named, but the DME said that 45% of the applications were related to wind energy, 34% to biomass, and 8% for small-scale hydro projects. The government had set a renewable energy target of 10,000 GWh by 2013.

Diversifying the energy mix away from coal, which currently comprises about 90% of South Africa’s generation mix, also formed an important part of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism’s long-term mitigation scenario process on climate change.
