SA Power Crunch Offers Opportunity

South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom is looking for solutions to the ongoing power crunch in the country and to that end, has invited companies to tender for power plants with a capacity range of 5MW to 100MW.

Eskom took out advertisements going in to the weekend in hopes of coming up with various solutions to address its ongoing difficulties in bringing power to industry in the country. Companies are welcome to bring new technologies to the table, upgrade facilities, or build new plants. The main stipulation Eskom made was that any power generation project would need to be brought online by 2012.

Eskom has found load-shedding to become increasingly necessary over recent months as it struggles to meet the power needs of the country. South Africa will most likely experience regular power cuts for at least the next five years until new baseload capacity comes onstream.
