SA Solar Panel Facility Startup Date Pushed Back

Photovoltaic Technology Intellectual Property (PTIP) has targeted an October startup date for its new solar panel facility in South Africa. Whether the company will make the startup date is questionable however, as the date has already been pushed back once and the company has yet to begin construction.

Once the facility is constructed and online however, it is slated to produce 450,000 ultra-thin (5 micro-meters) solar panels per year.

The ultra thin solar panel technology is a result of years of research by Vivian Alberts, a professor from the University of Johannesburg. Alberts’ solar panels are unique in that they do not require silicon, hence decreasing production costs significantly.
