Saudi Arabia Looks to Develop Nuclear and Solar Energy

The world’s top oil exporter, Saudi Arabia, is looking to slash its fossil fuel consumption and has signed a major agreement with French nuclear company Areva. The French company and Saudi-based Binladin Group will sign a partnership agreement to develop nuclear and solar energy.

“Nuclear and renewable energy will reduce dependence on fossil fuels by 2050,” Hashim Yamani, president of the King Abdullah Atomic and Renewable Energy City, said. Adding that nuclear and renewable energy would free up more oil for exports, he said, "Saudi will need to invest upfront in nuclear energy, but the oil saved will contribute significantly to the costs."
