Saudis Blame RE, Ask for Compensation for Loss of Oil Income

The Saudi Arabia climate envoy said that members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) were asked to bear too much of the burden on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Saudi Arabia has asked for compensation for the loss of income from oil sales as consumers look to obtain energy from cleaner fuels such as natural gas or renewable energy. OPEC members are opposed to emissions reduction targets imposed by industrialized nations party to the Kyoto Protocol.

“Climate policies on the international level are mainly targeting the transportation sector, so they will impact the demand for oil,” Mohammed al-Sabban, the country’s chief negotiator at talks on global climate change, said Monday in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia should “take seriously” the potential impact of oil demand peaking in 2050, he said.

Saudi Arabia is focusing on developing solar power plants as it seeks to reduce its own use of crude to generate power, said the envoy.
