Over 90 have been killed at last count as a result of a suicide bomb attack at a checkpoint in the Somali capital of Mogadishu Saturday. Over 100 were wounded and both the death and injured tolls are expected to rise.
An explosives-laden vehicle blew up in the middle of a checkpoint on a road leading to Afgoye District in Lower Shabelle Province. According to reports, up to 100 vehicles and rickshaws carrying passengers were in line at the check point for routine security inspections when the explosion went off.
At least 30 of the dead were students. Additionally, a number of Somali police officers along with two Turks were among those fatally wounded.
At the time of writing, no organization had claimed responsibility for the bombing, but the al Shabab terrorist group ranks high on the list of suspected culprits.
