Senegal Pledges Less Fossil Fuel, More RE

Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade said at the inauguration ceremony of the 4th International Exhibition of Renewable Energy and Environment in Africa that the country planned to release a new energy policy that would replace thermal power plants. The African leader said that imported materials were eating a chunk out of the country’s pocket because they are paid via foreign currency. “This is the reason Senegal wants to put in place an energy policy to gradually replace the thermal power plants. The challenge is economic, financial, and social,” he added.

He said that the shift would bring Senegal’s renewable energy use up to 60% of its total energy generation. “In the short term, we are forced to rent equipment for the production and the transitional phase will last 15 months, maximum. But at the same time, we take this period of time to maintain facilities,” he concluded.
