A solar start up out of Senegal, Oolu, is trying to bring power to the people in its country who do not have access to it. The startup recently secured a $3.2 million Series A funding round to deploy in-home solar kits for a minimal monthly fee.
Oolu will use the finds to further its current operations in Senegal and Mali. The funds will also be used to expand into a third market in 2018.
The solar kits include three adjustable lights and two USB plugs, powered by a battery that holds a charge for up to six hours with maximum output. The low monthly fee for the solar kits is payable through mobile money.
The company installs the system and performs any necessary maintenance, including free battery replacements and system upgrades.
