Siemens Delivers First Blades to Egypt’s West Bakr Wind Farm

Siemens announced yesterday that it had its first blades had arrived at the 250-MW West Bakr windfarm in Egypt. The company is working on the installation of 96 SG 2.6-114 wind turbines that will increase Egypt’s wind capacity by 18% and power over 350.000 homes.

Located 30 km north-west of Ras Ghareb, West Bakr Wind is a part of the government’s Build, Own, Operate (BOO) scheme. It will provide an additional 250 MW of clean energy to the grid, increasing Egypt’s wind energy capacity. The project will also reduce more than 550,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Lekela, the renewable power generation company, is the project developer. The wind farm broke ground in February and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.
