Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Prof. Ogulande Davidson made an appearance at the first assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held in Abu Dhabi from April 3-5.
Davidson stressed Sierra Leone’s commitment to Irena, while also reminding attendees that Abu Dhabi had promised to assist the country to be the renewable energy hub for West Africa. He added that other than its already established hydropower base, Sierra Leone will begin implementing street lamp campaigns while also working with Addax to provide energy from waste.
Renewable energy currently accounts for 60% of Sierra Leone’s total electricity production. Davidson said that the establishment of Irena was an integral part of expanding the renewable energy sector. He added, “Our country is convinced that renewable energy will form the basis of its dedicated rural energy system.”
