Sierra Leone’s First IPP

Sierra Leone is getting its first independent power producer (IPP) project underway with Addax & Oryx Group’s Makeni Project. The project will include a sugar cane plantation, ethanol refinery, and a biomass power plant. Expected to be online in 2013, the plant is projected to produce 30 MW of renewable energy per annum with 15 MW being fed into the national grid.

Eversheds and SNR Denton have been contracted to consult on the project. Eversheds partner Howard Barrie said: “This financing agreement marks a further milestone for what is an important project for Sierra Leone. It places the country at the forefront of the development of biofuels projects on the continent.”

Construction will be around £119.17 million and will provide 2,000 jobs. South Africa – take note.
