Solar on Agenda for UNEP

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznan is focused on many alternative/renewable facets to taming the energy crisis, and solar is right on top. Representatives from three leading international solar companies and UN Environment Program (UNEP) gathered in Poland to propose the implementation and expansion of policies designed to support the growth of the solar industry.

The group encouraged the adoption of a set of major climate and energy policies to enable solar to make a significant contribution toward Green House Gas reduction and economic-development goals, including:

    -- Stringent, ambitious, international and national carbon regulation
       policies;
    -- Enforceable renewables mandates with a solar carve out or credit
       multiplier for solar energy;
    -- Near-term incentives that could include feed-in tariffs, partial
       rebates, tax credits and/or property-based loans;
    -- And favorable net metering, interconnection, permitting and land-use
       policies.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland is a key step on the road to establishing an effective global response to climate change at Copenhagen in December 2009. The conference, which runs from December 1-12, is expected to host close to eleven thousand participants, including delegates from 186 Parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC) and representatives from business and industry, environmental organizations and research institutions. The Parties to the UNFCC are expected to agree on a plan of action for the final year of negotiations about the commitments which will be undertaken in the Copenhagen agreement in 2009.
