Noguchi Memorial Institute of the University of Ghana saw the first phase, totaling 315 kWh, of its solar power system inaugurated on April 17. The solar park is the first large-scale scheme to be completed since the Renewable Energy Bill was passed into law in 2010. The agreement for the project was signed by the governments of Ghana and Japan in 2010, and construction began in late-June 2012.
The power generated from the solar system will be used by the institute with the rest going to power the University of Ghana. The design and procurement process is currently underway for the second phase which will add 400 kWh of electricity to the country’s grid.
