Ghana has determined that powering its high schools with solar energy will cost an estimated $420 million. This would cover a little more than 500 schools, initially.
Seth Mahu, the deputy director of the renewable energy department, at the country’s Ministry of Energy said:
"We have more than 500 high schools according to data from the Ministry of Education. If we have to install about 100 KW of solar power in each of these schools, we will need approximately $420 million of initial investment. Indeed, this amount does not include the maintenance of the equipment over time.”
The government will need to find funding for the plan as it is unable to finance the infrastructure on its own.
The Ghanaian government has set a goal of increasing the share of renewable energies (other than hydropower) in its energy mix to 10% by 2020.
