Solar Prospects in Uganda

Chicago-based Ronald Mutebi is making plans to help his native Uganda explore renewable energy by establishing a manufacturing plant that will make and distribute solar ovens across East Africa.

The solar cooker, valued at $180, is set to debut in April with initial pilots in four rural districts already underway.

Mutebi told The East African that he has more than 1,000 potential buyers for the cooker. "The ultra sun cooker is designed to meet up to 70% of the cooking needs of a typical family, entirely using the power of the sun," he said.

In January 2010, Mutebi was awarded $100,000 from the African Diaspora Marketplace competition which has gone toward the shipment of components for 365 solar ovens and tools (produced by Sun Ovens International in Elgin, Illinois) that was delivered in October. The following month, he traveled to Uganda to oversee the completion of an assembly plant and staff training.
