23rd September 2020 Mogadishu, Somalia – The appointment of Mohamed Hussein Roble as Prime Minister of The Federal Republic of Somalia by His Excellency President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has been confirmed by The Federal Parliament, with an overwhelming majority voting in favor.
Mohamed Hussein Roble has enjoyed a long and distinguished career serving in senior positions both with the United Nations (where he was instrumental in developing its Country Frameworks) and the Somali Government. This has included working with the Federal Member States to help build local institutions and support economic and community development through policy formulation, strategic planning and United Nations’ reform. He led the implementation of country programmes with a total value in excess of US$200 million, operating in close collaboration with international partners including the European Union, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Germany.
A key focus of his leadership was to ensure that accountable and effective systems for procurement, budgeting and planning were rigorous and fully functional. Open forums for discussion were an important feature of his approach, encouraging local citizens to participate in decision making. This also promoted the role of women in the planning process, which translated into the incorporation of new priorities such as maternity wards and children’s education into Government policy.
Mohamed Hussein Roble was born in 1963 in Hobya, Galmudug and holds a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Infrastructure from Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology as well a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from The Somali National University. Commenting on the appointment His Excellency President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmaajo” said: “Mohamed Hussein Roble has made a significant contribution to the development of Somalia over many years working closely with both the Federal Member States and our international partners. As a result, he has already made a huge difference to the everyday lives of millions of Somalis. Mohamed Hussein Roble has a proven track record of working collaboratively with the Federal Member States and possesses the vision and administrative skills to lead the Government over a pivotal period of continued reconstruction and development.”
His Excellency Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble said: “Somalia is a great nation that has come a long way in recent years. I am deeply honored to be entrusted with the role of Prime Minister by the President and the Federal Parliament – particularly at this historic moment for our country, as we move towards our next stage of democratic elections. The role gives me the opportunity to build upon the progress delivered by my predecessor, working with my colleagues across the Federal Government and Federal Member States to promote socio-economic development across Somalia. We face many challenges, including the threat of floods and drought, compounded by COVID-19. Bringing all elements of society together to confront and surmount these challenges will be my priority, whilst ensuring that longer term investment in our infrastructure, economy, health, education and public safety, continues to be implemented effectively and accountably. Together, Somalis will continue to build a better future and I will work tirelessly to lead and facilitate this as Prime Minister.”
