South Africa’s Ambitious $39 Million Nuclear Program

South Africa’s National Treasury has unveiled a $39-million nuclear power scheme which could bring 9.6 GW of electricity to the country by 2029.

The country’s current Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) has allotted 42% of new electricity capacity be generated from renewable energy while 23% would come from nuclear power (the remainder is comprised of conventional forms of energy as well as imported hydropower).

The government has allegedly contacted French and Chinese companies to consider submitting proposals for the tender process that would likely start later this year. Potential firms said to be interested in South Africa’s ambitious nuclear power roll out include France’s Areva and its electricity utility EDF, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group, US-based Westinghouse, South Korea’s Kepco, and Rosatom of Russia.
