South Africa’s DA Party Proposes New Energy Ministry

South Africa‘s Democratic Alliance (DA) has proposed the creation of a new Ministry for Energy and Climate Change to separate the energy and mining sectors.

The group said it would prohibit Eskom’s monopolization of the electricity market if elected, and open it up to other competitors. The DA claims its energy policy, entitled, “In Trust for the Nation,” has concrete energy generation, distribution, and efficiency proposals that safeguard energy supply and would allow new entrants into the market.

However, the DA has said it welcomes Nersa’s planned electricity “auction” program. Under this plan, companies that save electricity could sell the surplus power allocation to other companies.
