Waterfall Mall, located in South Africa’s Rustenburg, will soon see a utility scale rooftop solar power plant which would generate power equivalent to about 750 average sized homes.
Growthpoint Properties signed an agreement with Solarcentury Africa and Eskom as part of Eskom’s Integrated Demand Management program that subsidizes 20% of the capital costs. “Growthpoint has piloted alternative energy generation at three of our office properties, but this is our first ‘utility scale’ development and the first at a shopping mall,” said Essop Basha, Head of Utilities at Growthpoint Properties. “It is some 13 times larger than the first rooftop solar plant Growthpoint tested.”
