The largest power utility in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), South Africa’s Eskom, is looking to help make a reliable power grid for the region. Eskom group transmission executive Mongezi Ntsokolo said that Eskom hoped to have an “integrated southern electrical grid running by 2020” reaching 260 million people in the region.
The SAPP are trying to build high-voltage transmission links which could also have some renewable energy flowing through the lines. Eskom has erected seven of the planned 46 wind turbines in South Africa’s Western Cape with solar projects in the Northern Cape. These projects combined would add an average of 200 MW to the grid.
