Sudan Feasts via Solar Cookers

Local company Solar Energy Enterprises Companty Ltd. (SEEC) is attempting to educate Sudanese residents about solar cookers by offering public demonstrations. In May, the company conducted “Solar Lunch in Khartoum” using the Scheffler community kitchen module feeding over 200 residents with a menu that included Sudanese staples like aseeda, chicken and vegetables, and even macaroni and cheese.

SEEC Director Dr. Salih Hamadto said one highlight of the exposition was watching one woman’s reaction to the solar cookers. “[She] shrugged the lads off, took the stirrer and showed them the ‘professional way’ of stirring.” He added, “She was really enjoying herself.”

The company has a line of solar thermal products, mainly focusing on solar cookers. The products are manufactured locally, and SEEC is instituting solar community kitchens, like El Gardarif Prison in eastern Sudan, that can feed thousands of meals each day. SEEC also distributes innovative solar box cookers, mini solar water distillers, and is currently developing food dryers.

SEEC began in 1987 offering a variety of services including incorporating manufacturing general steel products, special products for the oil sector, and rural drinking water plants. The company now has an active production line of large-scale solar community cookers (using Scheffler collectors), food dryers, water heaters, domestic parabolic dish cookers, and newly-designed solar box cookers.
