Joyce Banda, Malawi’s new president, has urged the African Union (AU) to resend Sudan’s president Omar al-Bashir’s invitation to attend the summit in Malawi to be held in July. She stated that her concerns were the “economic implications” if Bashir attends the AU meeting.
While Banda wants the AU to ultimately decide on Bashir’s attendance and recognition of the International Criminal Courts’ warrant for genocide, she said Malawi was struggling to fix its economy. Banda’s predecessor Bingu wa Mutharika had ignored calls by the ICC to apprehend Bashir.
